TOP 5 Real-Time Visibility myths impacting Logistics Service Providers

Thanks to our Visibility Hub, we've witnessed first-hand how real-time transport visibility is revolutionising operations for logistics service providers (LSPs) and carriers across Europe.

From better customer management to streamlined communication and reduced check call times, the benefits are clear. However, many miss out on these advantages due to misconceptions surrounding the technology.

In this whitepaper we debunk five common myths, backed up by the experiences of our Visibility Hub customers. We want to show that by embracing real-time visibility you can take the leap into the future of logistics.

Myths & facts

Myth #1: “My carriers already use a GPS system and telematics. It feels like I’d just be adding more complexity to our system and duplicating costs by using RTV.”

It’s a common misconception that telematics and real-time transport visibility (RTV) are the same thing. Telematics involves collecting vehicle data – such as GPS location, fuel levels and vehicle status – which is analysed to optimise operations, refine routes and prevent vehicle issues. RTV, on the other hand, provides insights into shipment locations and statuses in real time, enhancing visibility and efficiency in logistics.

Myth #2: “If l let clients access real-time shipment data it gives them too much control, leading to increased pressure and unrealistic demands on our shipping operations.”

Many LSPs fear that sharing fleet information reduces control, because if someone outside their organisation can track their trucks they may demand more and try to predict their pricing. However, this fear is unfounded for two reasons, as we explain in our whitepaper.

Dissegna Logistics also reveals how it implemented Visibility Hub for over 800 of its subcontractors’ daily FTL transports in just THREE months.

Myth #3: “This is high value data. It could even be used to track high-value shipments for hijacking. It’s just not safe.”

As more of our lives are spent operating online, the idea that our most personal data is out there ready for anyone to take can be terrifying. However, this is not the case. Although security risks exist, they are very low and are even lower when it comes to RTV data.

Myth #4: “Embracing RTV will lead to dependency on larger corporations for technology and processes, and can potentially undermine our independent decision making and squeeze our margins.”
Smaller freight forwarders and carriers often worry about losing independence to larger companies when adopting RTV. However, RTV can actually provide LSPs with the opportunity to do their business more freely. Want to know more?
Myth #5: “RTV is yet another huge, resource-intensive and risky IT project that could divert our focus and resources away from our primary logistics and customer service goals.”

Just as past innovations faced scepticism before becoming an integral part of daily life, RTV is now gaining traction, especially with the rise of Industry 4.0. According to PwC's research on 'Connected and autonomous supply chain ecosystems 2025,' companies that heavily invest in digitally connected networks experience up to 8% additional revenue and 7% reduced costs after a two-year payback period.

This significant impact underscores the value of embracing RTV, which promises many tangible returns in supply chain management. You find out just what these returns are in our whitepaper.
