Harmonizing logistics
Thomann strikes the right note with Transporeon and Peripass Solutions
The company
For over 70 years, the Thomann family has been shaping the music industry. In 1954, Hans Thomann Sr. left life as a traveling musician to start a music business from the family farm in Germany. From those humble beginnings, Thomann grew into one of the world's largest mail-order music retailers, serving both B2B and B2C customers across Europe and beyond.
Today, Thomann runs Europe's largest music warehouse, with an inventory of over 115,000 SKUs spanning everything from small accessories to grand pianos. That kind of range demands smart logistics — and by partnering with Transporeon's automation and advanced technology, Thomann has built a supply chain that delivers speed, precision and an exceptional customer experience.
It's where deep industry knowledge meets innovation. And it shows.
The challenge
Managing transport logistics and goods-in at their Treppendorf warehouse was a constant challenge.
Spread across multiple buildings, the facility had no dedicated trailer yard, limited waiting zones, and several entry points — a combination that created logistical bottlenecks.
Operations relied on manual processes for dock assignments, leading to inconsistent workflows at peak times and little visibility over incoming shipments or unloading schedules.
Thomann’s customers have come to expect excellent service – whether for items already in stock or just arriving. Fast outbound shipments, particularly for high-demand products like limited-edition guitars, rely on efficient, well-coordinated inbound processes and seamless warehouse operations. But disorganized inbound workflows and poor communication between parties meant delays, unpredictable workloads, and long wait times for drivers. Costs rose, productivity fell, and the customer experience suffered.
The solution
After evaluating several vendors, Thomann chose Transporeon — and implemented two solutions to tackle their logistical challenges, from both ends.
Retail Time Slot Management lets retailers book delivery slots online, bringing order to truck arrivals. With better visibility over upcoming workloads, Thomann could plan more effectively, cut waiting times, and make fuller use of available resources.
Peripass Yard Management addressed what time slots alone couldn't fix — unplanned deliveries like air freight or ad-hoc smaller shipments, and the added complexity of navigating a multi-building site. By digitizing driver check-ins and embedding gate assignments into warehouse capacity management, the solution ensured faster access to unloading zones and tighter coordination between yard and warehouse teams.
Together, the two systems closed the loop. Delays fell, transparency improved, and workflows that had long relied on guesswork and manual intervention became measurably more efficient — at lower operational cost.
The results
Implementing Transporeon's Retail Time Slot Management and Peripass Yard Management has transformed logistics at Thomann — reducing delays, cutting costs, and boosting productivity across the board.
