Decarbonizing Freight 2022

Here’s to new beginnings.

This year represents an encouraging leap forward in the decarbonization of freight. Major changes in emissions tracking and reporting stand out, especially compared to activity recorded throughout 2020 and 2021.

In May 2022, Kuehne Logistics University and Smart Freight Centre in partnership with Transporeon surveyed 340 shippers and carriers on the topic of decarbonization. Now, the findings are ready to share.

Get fresh insight into:

  • The shift in attitude towards sustainability from companies responsible for scope 1 emissions

  • Primary motivators for carriers to decarbonize

  • Preferred alternatives to fossil fuels – and analysis into how these choices are being formed

  • Where the gaps remain, and consensus on the biggest challenges still to overcome

  • Sustainability trailblazers’ perspectives on routes to decarbonizing freight and achieving sustainability targets

And much more.

These results indicate a step-change in awareness and green agenda setting! We must keep this trend going and importantly, ensure that both shippers and carriers live up to their aspirations. The CountEmissionsEU initiative proposed for early 2023 aims to establish a common methodology for measuring door-to-door GHG emissions – and I think it will arrive just in time to help keep track of progress.

Where do you place in the race towards carbon neutrality?

Decarbonizing Freight 2022 documents dramatic shifts in the right direction as pressure grows to meet critical and looming targets enforced by the EU Commission. The number of respondents who agree that sustainability represents a large or very large business opportunity near doubled since 2020, meanwhile we can feel optimistic as a 50% increase is reported in the proportion of shippers with a decarbonization strategy and science-based reduction targets in place.

EXCERPT FROM THE REPORT

The decarbonization of freight has started

In 2022 the decarbonization of freight has gained pace indeed. While carriers and shippers are not perfectly aligned, the gap has started to narrow down. With extended sustainability reporting requirements and carbon taxation ahead, close collaboration may be in the interest of all parties.
